Jazz Time

I used some of my music sketches to do these two pieces for the annual “What Time Is it” group show which celebrates 4:20.

Animals and Radicals

Animals We Eat was recently featured in a group show at Booklyn, the amazing artist’s books focused arts organization.

The show is called LIL’ RADICALS: MULTICULTURAL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE PUBLICATIONS FOR KIDS IN THE 21ST CENTURY. It runs from April 6, 2019 – June 1, 2019

In recent years we have witnessed a new and exciting wave of storytelling in children’s literature in response to the wide diversity gap in children’s book publishing. Industry publishers have answered the call for diverse characters and marginalized histories, but tend to stay safely within the bounds of a conservative book market. We wanted to know, where are the diversity stories that aren’t published by the big houses?

Well…we found them!

Lil’ Radicals is an exhibition and celebration of independently published children’s books with a focus on multicultural affirmation, social justice education, and empathy development. For reading ages 3-12, these books were either self-published or published by small and independent presses throughout New York City, across the U.S., and in parts of Canada and Europe. Works on view present a dynamic range of stylistic and narrative approaches to children’s publications that affirm, teach, and comfort children; challenge standards; and surprise adult readers.

Animals We Eat is a straightforward picture book, with no text, which will help kids realize that food doesn’t just come from the supermarket or the fast food restaurant. Children are curious about everything, but do they know where their hamburgers, drumsticks, and bacon come from?

This book was created by a vegetarian, Berns Rothchild, and a carnivore, Chris Smith. Though their diets are different, they agree that there’s a disconnect between the farm and the table. Animals We Eat reminds both children and adults where their food comes from.

This book is for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. It is for both children and adults.

The illustrations are fun, bright, engaging and modern. Animals We Eat educates children, entertains adults and encourages environmental consciousness for all.

subtexture vs self-indulgence

In this corner, we have Subtexture a.k.a. Chris ‘Smitty’ Smith – Greenpoint’s champion.  For over 20 years, Smitty has been absorbing his neighborhood’s aesthetics, painting on signs and other found objects. His work is of the street and for the people.

In the other corner, from the Southside of Williamsburg, we have Self-Indulgence a.k.a. Mark Albright.  Another artist who gets his inspiration from his Brooklyn neighborhood.  His love of spray paint and stencils, mirror the street art he admires.

Smitty and Mark met at the Brooklyn Ale House over a decade ago.  Both are members of the Maggot Brain art collective, of which Smitty is the founder.  We would like to thank our neighbor, Sage for hosting our art show.

The Hopelessness of Hope

This is the piece I did for our annual “Scary Art for Scary Times” show at Brooklyn Safehouse.

I riffed on a famous Banksy piece and did a version using Edward Scissorhands trying to grab a balloon.

For Bushwick Open Studios I curated a show of my 13 favorite artists in show we called the Baker’s Dozen.

Greed Show

South 4th Bar is closing because of greedy landlords, so we’re having one last group show. I designed the poster and did a series of pieces based on my photos of shuttered businesses around Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Hallelujah - Celebrating Leonard Cohen

We’re having a group show to celebrate the life and work of Leonard Cohen. My ex-wife Nancy introduced me to Leonard back in the late 80’s, so I always think of her when I hear his early work.
When I set out to do a piece for the show, I wanted to use an image of her from those times, then I realized that he has a song called, “It seems so long ago, Nancy” and it all came together.

Friends we know

I’m in a group show at South 4th Bar called “Friends We Know” and we’re doing portraits of our friends. I did a portrait of Monte, who did the illustration of Simon Trolley for the poster (which I designed)

**UPDATE. Both pieces have sold.

Wayard Bathroom Takeover 2

In 2017 Wayward Social invited me back to do a bathroom takeover and group show during Bushwick Open Studios. I invited the members of the Maggot Brain collective to contribute drawings and we wheatpasted the two bathrooms.

Brooklyn Bridge Birthday pieces

The Urban Folk Arts gallery on Smith street in Boerum Hill used to have a yearly show celebrated the birth of the Brooklyn Bridge, here are some of my pieces from over the years.

Bob Ross Earth Day

For Go Green’s Earth Day celebration I dressed up as Bob Ross and we made a bunch of science related stencils for us and the kids to play with.

streetshadows installation at Gallery 3

Here’s an oldie but a a goodie, this is a time-lapse of a streetshadows installation I did at Gallery 3 in Ft. Greene back in 2008. The photos were all taken in Greenpoint, so I used the Fleshtones’ Greenpoint song.
The installation featured large wall graphics, color and black and white photography and hand painted streetshadows pieces done on pieces of old wood and found objects.

Wayward Bathroom Takeover

In 2016 I was invited to have a solo show and do ‘takeover’ of the bathrooms. I the images and stencils from my Artist in Action series and went to town.

GoGreen Live Art 2016

For Earth Day 2016 Francis and I joined up with a bunch of other artists and did some live art.
